Be well-equipped for hiking

The strength of Madeira hiking lies in the variety of the terrain on the island. Rising from sea level to 1,862m, the island is a veritable playground, and much of the terrain is easily, and quickly, reached. So, hikes in Madeira can mean anything from climbing mountain peaks with Atlantic views to walking through lush forests to strolling around the rugged, cliff-drop coasts on a dry and dusty path.

You can't go hiking without a specific backpack for hiking, with the necessary equipment for the good practice of the walk. The bag must be adapted to you, with the various possible beddings according to your practice of the walk, between 20 and 60 litres. It should be as comfortable as possible, with straps to distribute the weight on your back.

It's always good to inform yourself about the hike that you will do. Some hikes vary between 30 minutes to up 7 hours, most of the hikes are listed in the link below:

What to put in your rucksack

  • Rain gear, important in Madeira. A simple windbreaker with a hood can do the trick.
  • A waterproof clothing.
  • Sunscreen - you never know what weather you will find.
  • Picnic, snacks, banana is a very good addition and especially water.
  • A headlamp - you never know what the day will bring, maybe an unexpected tunnel on the hike path.
  • A rubbish bag to keep nature clean.

Safety facts

  • Never hike alone.
  • A mini first aid kit.
  • Never leave a path. It's easy to fall or get lost
